Santa Cruz is home to one of the most breathtaking and scenic coastlines in all of California. Paddle boarding Santa Cruz waters has become a top pick in the list of Santa Cruz activities. Can you blame people for wanting to paddle out on the Monterey Bay to get closer to fish, Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Otters, porpoises, dolphins and whales. Some of these smaller marine creatures like to congregate around wharfs at Capitola, Seacliff and Santa Cruz. Paddle boarding around these large structures can be fun and exciting. We’ve put together a short list of safety tips to keep you and you safe when paddling boarding Santa Cruz waters.
- Look out for Fishing Lines – You don’t want to get yourself caught up in fishing lines dropping down from a wharf. Getting stuck with a fishing hook can ruin an otherwise relaxing afternoon.
- Watch out for the casting fishing line – There’s the odd occasion when a fisherman will actually aim and cast their line at a paddle boarder. It’s a good idea to stay beyond reach of the casting fishermen.
- Be aware of waves and current – When waves push their way through a pier or wharf they will also push you. Larger waves could possibly push you into a piling and cause damage to you and your equipment. Educate yourself on the days waves and currents before paddling out.
- Look out for boats – Capitola and Santa Cruz wharfs have boats that launch and return on a frequent basis. Keep your eye out for approaching boats. Assume they cannot see you.
