Here are some basic surf etiquette rules to follow while surfing Santa Cruz or really anywhere in the world!
First and most basic rule – No surfer should EVER endanger another surfer in the water! To help ensure you are being as safe as possible, follow these additional tips to ensure that you and your fellow surfers have a good time in the water:
- The surfer closest to the breaking wave, or curl, has established possession and right to surf that wave.
- Two surfers may ride a single wave from one peak if the surfers go in opposite directions. Be safe and call out your direction.
- When paddling out, go around the break not through it. Stay clear of surfers on the waves.
- Neither surfer has the right of way when approaching each other.
- If a surfer has lost forward momentum or was wiped out, you may take possession of the wave.
- Hang on to your surfboard so that you do not endanger others.
In addition to the rules above, it is also best to choose a spot that is appropriate for your surfing abilities. To learn more about popular surfing spots in Santa Cruz read more on our post Santa Cruz Surfing Breaks.
